The Shops That Survive Platform Shifts

We’ve been building digital products since Flash was the future. We watched it die. We watched the industry pivot to mobile. Now AI is rewriting the rules again.

Every platform shift follows the same pattern: a new technology emerges, early adopters build on it, incumbents dismiss it, and then suddenly the landscape has changed. The shops that survive aren’t the ones with the best tech stack. They’re the ones that understand what’s actually changing and what isn’t.

What changes

The tools change. The platforms change. The distribution channels change. Ten years ago, if you weren’t building mobile-first, you were already behind. Five years ago, if you weren’t thinking about voice interfaces, you were missing the next wave (though that wave turned out to be smaller than predicted).

Now it’s AI. And unlike voice, this one is real.

What doesn’t change

Users still need products that solve real problems. Design still matters. Code quality still matters. The fundamentals of building something people actually want to use never changes.

The shops that survive platform shifts are the ones that treat technology as a tool, not an identity. They’re not “a Flash shop” or “a mobile shop” or “an AI shop.” They’re a product shop that uses whatever technology best serves the product.

The AI shift is different

Every previous platform shift was about a new way to deliver the same kind of product. Mobile was a new screen. Voice was a new input method. AI is different because it changes what products can do.

A mobile app is still fundamentally a tool that a human operates. An AI-native product can think, reason, and act on its own. That’s not a platform shift. It’s a capability shift. And it requires a fundamentally different approach to product design.

The shops that will thrive in this era are the ones that understand this distinction. Not the ones adding chatbots to existing products, but the ones rethinking what products should be when intelligence is a building block.
